SCD Studio presents ṬILISMĀN – The Magical Power of Words, an exhibition project that investigates the transformativepower of language – between word and symbolic potency –through the talisman-object as a threshold between art and ritual.

The exhibition explores the performative dimension of the word, understood not merely as a vehicle of meaning but as a force capable of shaping reality. Since ancient times, words have beenregarded as magical instruments, formulas of protection or desire: from the Greek magical papyri to medieval amulets inscribed with verba sacra, up to contemporary mottos that take on the role of personal mantras or statements of identity. Twentieth-centurylinguistics and anthropology have reaffirmed this ancient intuition, recognizing in language a power of action as well as of description – a “saying” that makes things happen.

In ṬILISMĀN, the word takes form and becomes matter: a signto be worn or kept close, an inscription that unites gesture, memory, and intention. The works on display engage with thislegacy, translating the idea of the ritual formula into contemporaryforms as spaces of resistance and metamorphosis.

The talisman, in its broadest genealogy, is not merely an ornamental object but a symbolic device – that which connects the visible and the invisible, the material and the conceptual. Throughdiverse media – textile, sculptural, graphic, performative – the artists restore to the word its original function as a creative and generative act.

The term ṬILISMĀN, of Persian origin, refers to an objectimbued with signs and inscriptions to which a propitiatory power was attributed. In ancient times as today, the talisman embodiesthe human desire to orient fate, to make tangible a wish for beauty and for good. In this perspective, the works presented by SCD Studio inhabit a space suspended between language as incantationand art as a practice of knowledge.

The exhibition catalogue, published by Al3vie Editore and conceived in its customary pocket format, renews the idea of the book as a small talisman to carry with oneself – a gesture of symbolic continuity.

SCD Studio presenta ṬILISMĀN – Il potere magico delle parole, un progetto espositivo che indaga il potere trasformativo del linguaggio, tra parola e potere simbolico, attraverso l’oggetto-talismano come soglia tra arte e rito.

La mostra esplora la dimensione performativa della parola, intesa non come semplice veicolo di significato, ma come forza capace di incidere sulla realtà. Sin dalle origini, le parole sono state considerate strumenti magici, formule di protezione o di desiderio: dai papiri magici greci agli amuleti medievali incisi con verba sacra, fino ai motti contemporanei che assumono la funzione di mantra personali o dichiarazioni identitarie. La linguistica e l’antropologia del Novecento hanno confermato questa intuizione antica, riconoscendo nel linguaggio un potere di azione oltre che di descrizione — un dire che fa accadere.

In ṬILISMĀN, la parola prende corpo e diventa materia, segno da indossare o da custodire, iscrizione che unisce gesto, memoria e intenzione. Le opere in mostra interrogano questa eredità, traducendo in forme contemporanee l’idea di formula rituale come spazio di resistenza e di metamorfosi.
Il talismano, nella sua genealogia più ampia, non è solo oggetto ornamentale ma dispositivo simbolico: ciò che unisce il visibile e l’invisibile, il materiale e il pensiero. Attraverso linguaggi diversi — tessile, scultoreo, grafico, performativo — gli artisti restituiscono alla parola la sua funzione originaria di atto creativo e generativo.

Il termine ṬILISMĀN, di radice persiana, rimanda all’oggetto carico di segni e iscrizioni cui veniva attribuito un potere propiziatorio. Nell’antichità come oggi, il talismano rappresenta il desiderio umano di orientare il destino, di rendere tangibile l’augurio di bellezza e di bene. In questa prospettiva, le opere presentate da SCD Studio si collocano in un territorio sospeso tra il linguaggio come incantesimo e l’arte come pratica di conoscenza.

Il catalogo della mostra, edito da Al3vie Editore, concepito nel consueto formato tascabile, rinnova l’idea del libro come piccolo talismano da portare con sé: un gesto di continuità simbolica.
