Albedo” (from the Latin for “whiteness”) in alchemical language is one of the stages of the Great Work, following the Nigredo phase. Symbolized by a white swan, it is called the “white work” and consists in the purification of the formless mass resulting from the Nigredo, washing away impurities to prepare it for the next phase: Rubedo.
In chemical terms, it corresponds to distillation, and metaphorically, to the liberation of the soul from the bonds of corporeality.
Here, Albedo takes on primarily a symbolic meaning and alludes to the spiritual world, which in this work is paramount. It is a luminous textile wall suggesting the possibility of an elsewhere without matter—a sacred place.
The work was exhibited during the TreArtisteQuattro 2022 exhibition curated by Giorgio Bonomi at the
Rocca di Umbertide Center for Contemporary Art, Piazza Fortebraccio, Umbertide • Pg, and has been acquired by the Museo della Rocca di Umbertide Center for Contemporary Art.
